Archives repositories

Based in Paris, I am close to the archive centres located in the capital or in its close suburbs. I regularly visit the National Archives in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, the Paris Archives in the 19th arrondissement of the city, and the Archives of the Préfecture de Police in Pré-Saint-Gervais.

If you wish to have access to documents held outside the Paris region, I can also go there after studying the feasibility of your research and reimbursing the related travel expenses (see the section “Services and rates”).

National Archives

The purpose of the National Archives is to preserve, classify and communicate the documents produced by the government and the central administrations of the State.

Archives of Paris

The Archives of Paris collects, inventories and communicates documents of historical interest concerning the city or the former department of the Seine.

Archives of the Préfecture de police de Paris

The Archives of the Police Prefecture only hold documents falling within the competence of its various departments within its territorial jurisdiction (i.e. the former department of the Seine and the current departments of Paris and the inner suburbs). The Service de la Mémoire et des Affaires Culturelles, to which they are part of, is responsible for sorting, inventorying, preserving and making them available to the public.

The finding aids that help you find your way around the various collections held in the Archives of the Préfecture de police de Paris are not available online and questions relating to the documentary series held there and which could be useful for your project can only be answered after consulting/verifying the inventories on site ; this exploratory work falls within the framework of services B.

Outside Paris

One (or more) trips are possible to visit the Departmental Archives (95 in metropolitan France) after assessing the feasibility of the research requested.

An estimate will be sent to the client prior to any prospecting in the documentary collections held in these departmental archives.
